  • The Alcatel 1 is the world’s cheapest Android smartphone to feature an 18:9 display.
  • The smartphone is available now in the United States for the first time for only $80.
  • The Alcatel 1 runs Android Go (Oreo edition) and can be purchased at Amazon.com.

Back in June, we found out the Alcatel 1 was landing in Europe for 79 euros (~$92), making it the cheapest Android smartphone available with an 18:9 display. Today, the Alcatel 1 is available in the United States for the first time for an even lower price: $80 with free shipping for Amazon Prime members.

The device is unlocked and runs on the Oreo version of the Android Go operating system.

The Alcatel 1 features a 5-inch 18:9 display with a 960 x 480 resolution; a 5MP rear camera and 2MP selfie camera; a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6739 chipset running with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage; and a 2,000mAh battery.

Editor's Pick

The 5MP sensor on the front actually takes digitally interpolated photos that end up looking like they were taken with an 8MP camera (according to Alcatel). The same goes for the front-facing camera, which creates 5MP-esque shots on its 2MP sensor.

The Alcatel 1 launched in three colors: Metallic Blue, Metallic Gold, and Metallic Black. Unfortunately, only the Metallic Black variant is available in America, at least so far.

While the Alcatel 1 is certainly no powerhouse device, it delivers the basic necessities of the Android experience for literally a fraction of the cost of most flagship smartphones. If you’re looking for a cheap entryway into Android, a backup device, or a device for your kids, this would be a great place to start.
