Welcome to the 255th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:
- PUBG Mobile has an interesting update coming out. It’s a cross promotional event with Mission: Impossible — Fallout. The update includes new background music, customizable parachutes, in-game rewards, and some new challenges. The event runs through August. After that, all of this new stuff goes away. It’s a decidedly normal thing for freemium games to have events like this. This one actually sounds a little interesting, though.
- YouTube was busy this last week. YouTube Music announced an update schedule. It should be every two weeks. The next update should include SD card support. We’ll let you know what the next one includes, if it includes anything. Additionally, the desktop YouTube site got a minor update. It now shows vertical videos and videos in aspect ratios other than 16:9. We still think shooting vertical videos is a terrible idea. However, they won’t look as bad on desktop as they used to.
- Microsoft is trying to bridge the gap between Windows and Android. The new app is Your Phone. It doesn’t do a whole lot yet. The Windows app shows you photos taken on your Android device. It doesn’t sync to the cloud or anything like that. It just shows your computer the photos taken with your phone. The app could be a super simple way to transfer them to your PC. There are plenty of ways to do it, but this one could actually be really good. It’s only available to those with the Windows Insider program right now. We’ll let you know more later.
- Fortnite is not coming to Google Play, apparently. The CEO of Epic Games confirmed as much earlier this week. Epic Games intends to launch the game to its own website and only its own website. Users need to download it there and install. There are security risks to this. However, Epic Games gets to skirt Google’s 30% free that they charge developers on all purchases. This is a bold move and we won’t know what happens with it until it happens.
- Reddit confirmed a cyber-attack from back in June. The attackers gained access to some of Reddit’s backup data. That includes data from as late as 2007. The information lost included email addresses, salted hashed passwords, and private messages. Those who joined after 2007 are fine. That’s good news, at least. Reddit reset the passwords of everyone affected already. Thus, it seems that most of the damage is under control.
Hello Neighbor is a new stealth horror game. It was first popularized on Windows PC via Steam. You break into your neighbors house to find all of his horrible secrets. You must get in and out without being spotted. Each time you escape, the neighbor improves his defenses for next time. It's an entertaining game that is also fairly difficult. This one has a few launch bugs. However, it should end up as one of the best games of the year if the developers can get those bugs shored up.
Pluvius is a new theming framework. That, of course, means it needs root. Otherwise, this could be a lot of fun for root users. It features a bunch of customization features. However, its hallmark feature is its simple theming. You set a wallpaper and the app changes your theme colors to match the wallpaper. It's brand new and still has the occasional bug. However, this could be a nice theming option for those on Android Oreo or below.
Pocket City is a city-builder sim much like that Sim City. You start with basically nothing. From there, you build a whole city. Some management stuff includes money, infrastructure, and even happiness levels. The game also includes offline support, portrait and landscape mode support, and more. This is a rare sim game with a single price tag. The free version is a demo with some advertising. Meanwhile, the paid version is $4.99 and has no additional micro-transactions.
Enpass6 Beta is a new beta app for Enpass Password Manager. It features a bunch of new features mixed with the old features. Some of the new features include a new UI, multiple account support, cloud syncing, archiving, a dark theme, and more. These features should make it to the normal Enpass app eventually. However, this is a decent way to check out new features before they hit the full app. The Enpass6 Beta app is free for now.
Holedown is a neat little puzzle game from the developers of Rymdkapsel. You shoot little things at blocks. They hit the blocks a certain number of times to destroy them. The game features 11 leaderboards, five achievements, one-handed controls, cloud saving, and about five hours of total game play. Some may not think that's good enough for $3.99. However, the game is surprisingly addictive and fun. Plus, it's almost impossible to get everything right the first try. In any case, this is a solid puzzler with a single price tag and no in-app purchases.
