Realme 1 details emerge: AI chip, 6GB RAM for Oppo sub-brand’s new phone

Realme 1 smartphone Amazon

We first heard about the Realme brand two weeks ago, a new, India exclusive sub-brand from Chinese giant Oppo. Now, ahead of the Realme 1 launch tomorrow (May 15), the brand has teased (and inadvertently revealed) a few details about its debut phone.

The phone, available exclusively via Amazon India, comes with a unique “diamond black” rear cover (above right). It looks as if this may have a textured effect, but a previous image of the device revealed that it’s completely flat.

The Amazon listing also claims the Realme 1 will have an “AI processor,” complete with AI-powered photos and battery management. If it’s indeed a budget-focused phone, then we’d expect the new Helio P60 chipset to make an appearance, being a mid-range processor with an AI chip.

The listing doesn’t give us any other specs, but a Google ad for the phone shows it’ll have 6GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the link for the ad isn’t active just yet. Nevertheless, this would line up with a recent, unverified Twitter leak, which claimed 6GB of RAM, a Helio P60 chipset, Android 8.1, a 6-inch 18:9 1080p display, and a 3,410mAh battery, among other features.

Adding more fuel to the Helio P60/6GB RAM fire are Geekbench results (spotted by My Smart Price), showing the same processor, amount of RAM, and Android version.

It’s shaping up to be a pretty impressive smartphone, but the leaks show it won’t have a fingerprint scanner  — a big feature to skip. Oppo is using facial recognition instead, but it’s not a perfect replacement as it doesn’t allow you to authenticate purchases and bank logins on Android.

We don’t know the Realme 1’s price just yet, but the Indian market is heating up with low-cost handsets. Earlier this year, we saw the Redmi Note 5 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 launch in the country, packing aggressive price-points; the Redmi Note 5 starts at 9,999 rupees (~$148), while the Asus device starts at 10,999 rupees (~$163).

Will the Realme 1 be priced well enough to cause a stir? We should find out tomorrow.
