Sorry, early adopters: new 128GB and 256GB Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus announced

  • Samsung will release 128GB and 256GB versions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
  • These new Galaxy S9 storage options will probably make folks angry who already bought the 64GB version.
  • The new Galaxy S9 storage options will be available exclusively at Samsung.com starting May 18.

If you held off on buying the Samsung Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus because both only came with 64GB of storage space, you’ll be happy with today’s news. If you bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus already, you’re probably going to be pretty upset.

Samsung announced today that, starting on May 18, there will be two new storage versions of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus: a 128GB model and a 256GB model. New pricing will reflect the storage upgrades, but the original 64GB models will remain the same price.

Since it is pretty impractical to upgrade the internal storage of a smartphone, this means anyone with a 64GB model of the Galaxy S9 will have to sell that version to rebuy an S9 with a bigger storage capacity. But, if Samsung had merely made the three different storage capacities available at launch, customers could have made that decision before initial purchase.

Editor's Pick

To add insult to injury, the Samsung press release on the matter has a pretty tone-deaf quote from Justin Denison, the Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. He says, “With these new high-capacity models and the flexibility of expandable storage, Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus owners have a variety of ways to keep their content close.”

Unfortunately, current owners of the device don’t have a choice in the matter. Future owners do though.

Granted, the Galaxy S9 devices that have been on sale since launch have the ability to add a microSD card to expand the internal storage. But that doesn’t make it any less inconvenient for Samsung to have waited a month to release two new versions with upgraded storage.

Other than the upgraded storage options, the “new” Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus versions will be identical to the original release. You will even have the same color options: Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Midnight Black.

Samsung.com will exclusively sell the upgraded versions, which will retail as follows:

  64GB 128GB 256GB
Galaxy S9 $719.99 $769.99 $819.99
Galaxy S9 Plus $839.99 $889.99 $939.99

You can pre-order the devices starting tomorrow, May 1, at Samsung.com.

What do you think? Are you upset Samsung waited a month to release these new options? Or are you happy with 64GB of storage? Let us know in the comments!
