The Nokia 1, the company’s first Android Go smartphone, will be available in India on March 28. HMD Global announced the smartphone during MWC 2018 in February.
Available in Warm Red and Dark Blue, the Nokia 1 will be available for Rs. 5,500 ($85). Getting the phone through Reliance Jio knocks the price down to Rs. 3,300 ($51) and throws in 60GB of additional data.
Additionally, the polycarbonate Xpress On covers will cost Rs. 450 ($7) for each pack. You can pick from a pack of Azure and Grey or Yellow and Pink, though we do not know if more colors will be available over time.
Other goodies include a 20% discount on your first ride through RedBus and Servify’s 12-month Accidental Damage Insurance if you open a Kotak 811 savings account.
As a recap, the Nokia 1 features a 4.5-inch display with an 854 x 450 resolution, 5MP primary camera, quad-core 1.1GHz MediaTek MT6737 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and a removable 2,150mAh battery.
As basic as the specifications are, Android Go was designed for this kind of entry-level hardware. Developed as a slimmer version of Android Oreo, Android Go also features storage-conscious versions of Google apps to create a reasonable experience for low-end smartphones.
The Nokia 1 is not the first Android Go smartphone to launch in India, since the LAVA Z50 beat it to the punch. Even so, HMD Global likely hopes that the former’s brand recognition will translate to higher sales than the latter.
